Welcome to Schwalbach Castle

It is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved castles in the Taunus: built in the 14th century by Count Eberhard V von Katzenelnbogen, Schwalbach Castle was used to secure the border. The place is still impressive today, with a tapered shield wall that is up to 5 m thick and 21 m tall in places, and a tin-topped castle keep that stretches up to 40 m high, making it visible from a long way off.

Due to restoration work, it is currently not possible to view the building.

Schwalbach Castle is located Above the village of Burgschwalbach. Originally belonging to Prüm Abbey, ownership eventually passed to its bailiffs, the Counts of Katzenelnbogen. In the 13th and 14th centuries, they established a territory to protect the castle, which was built between 1352 and 1371 by Eberhard V von Katzenelnbogen.
With the extinction of the von Katzenelnbogen family, the castle changed Hands several times over the following decades. The castle regained importance when it temporarily served as the residence of the Counts of Nassau-Weilburg. It was used as an official residence until the early 18th century, after which it fell into disrepair.
In the centre of the well-preserved Castle complex, the 39-metre-high keep rises behind a shield wall. Two three-storey residential buildings are grouped around a courtyard, which is closed off on the west side by the great hall. A curtain wall with battlements and two flanking Towers surrounds the core castle.
In 1946, the castle came into the Possession of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, which extensively renovated the Castle from 1979 to 1983 and has continued to do so since 2011.
